You arrive at Abu Simbel Airport (ABS) — a 45-minute flight from Aswan on EgyptAir, or a 3.5-hour road transfer from Aswan if preferred. Your guide and driver meet you at the airport and transfer you directly to the ship.

After check-in and a welcome lunch on board, the afternoon is devoted entirely to Abu Simbel — the most famous monument in Nubia and one of the greatest in the ancient world. You visit both temples:

• The Great Temple of Ramesses II — four colossi of Ramesses II, each 20 metres tall, guard the entrance. Inside, four pillared halls descend to the inner sanctuary where the four seated statues of the gods — Ptah, Amun-Ra, Ramesses II deified, and Ra-Horakhty — are illuminated by the rising sun on 22 February and 22 October each year: the Solar Alignment events, precisely engineered 3,200 years ago
• The Temple of Nefertari — dedicated to Queen Nefertari and the goddess Hathor, with six 10-metre colossi on the facade and perfectly preserved painted reliefs inside

Both temples were cut from the sandstone cliff and relocated 65 metres higher and 200 metres back from the original site by UNESCO between 1964 and 1968 — one of the most ambitious engineering operations in history — to save them from the rising waters of Lake Nasser behind the Aswan High Dam.

The ship departs Abu Simbel early morning and sails north. The first landmark is Qasr Ibrim — the only monument on Lake Nasser that was never moved. Originally a clifftop fortress, cathedral, mosque and oracle temple used continuously for 3,000 years, it now stands as an island in the middle of the lake, the water having risen around its base when the dam was completed. Entry is by special academic permit only; the ship passes close enough to see the walls and the ruins clearly from deck, and your guide explains its remarkable multi-civilisation history. The silence around it is complete.

Morning ashore: the Tomb of Pennout at Aniba — or rather, at its relocated site, having been cut block by block from the original rock at Aniba and reassembled here. Pennout was the Viceroy of Nubia under Ramesses VI. The tomb’s painted reliefs are exceptionally well preserved, showing Pennout with his family and servants, and the gods in attendance. It is a rare and intimate monument, visited by almost no tourists outside the cruise ships that pass this way.

Afternoon: the Temple of El Derr — a rock-cut temple of Ramesses II, the only one he built in Lower Nubia on the east bank of the Nile. Later consecrated as a Coptic Christian church, with fragments of plaster and early Christian symbols visible alongside the pharaonic carvings. A monument used for worship across two completely different religions, 1,500 years apart.

The richest day of the voyage. Four temple sites on the western shore, each distinct in character and period.

Wadi el-Seboua (“Valley of the Lions”) opens with an avenue of lion-headed sphinxes bearing the face of Ramesses II leading to the temple entrance — one of the most dramatic approaches to any monument in Egypt. The temple itself was built by Ramesses II for the god Amun; centuries later, Coptic Christians converted it to a church and painted their murals directly over the pharaonic reliefs. In places you can see both layers: a Christian saint’s face painted over a carved figure of Ramesses making an offering. Two religions, two civilisations, occupying the same wall.

Nearby: the Temple of Dakka — the most multi-cultural monument on Lake Nasser, with contributions from the Nubian king Arqamani, Ptolemy IV, Ptolemy VIII, Augustus, and Tiberius — spanning four centuries and two continents of political influence. And Meharraqa (Hierasykaminos) — an unfinished Roman-era chapel, notable for its unusual spiral staircase to the roof, the only one known in any ancient Egyptian temple.

Afternoon: the Temple of Amada — the oldest surviving monument on Lake Nasser, built by Pharaoh Tuthmosis III around 1450 BC and completed by his successors Amenhotep II and Tuthmosis IV. It contains the oldest historical text in Nubia: an inscription of Amenhotep II describing a military campaign in Asia. The painted reliefs inside Amada are among the finest and best-preserved of any Nubian temple — the blues, reds and yellows still vivid after 3,400 years. UNESCO moved the entire temple 2.6 kilometres inland on rails — in one piece, without disassembling it.

The ship arrives at Aswan in the morning. Before disembarkation, a final excursion to two monuments relocated to a site just south of Aswan, within sight of the High Dam:

The Temple of Kalabsha — the largest free-standing Nubian temple, built during the Roman period (reign of Augustus) and dedicated to Mandoulis, a Nubian solar deity. Its scale rivals temples built by the pharaohs: a massive pylon, colonnaded court, three successive halls and an inner sanctuary. The sandstone is warm-coloured and the reliefs unusually detailed for the Roman period. Beit el-Wali (“House of the Governor”) directly beside it — a rock-cut temple of Ramesses II with the most brightly painted reliefs of any site on Lake Nasser, scenes of battle, tribute and divine offering still showing their original colours, protected from direct sunlight for 3,000 years.

Afternoon: shore excursion to the desert edge of the lake — a landing point accessible only to ships with a shallower draft or smaller tenders, where the Nubian desert meets the water. Your guide leads a walk along the shoreline: Nubian birdlife, desert plants adapted to the lake edge, and a perspective of the lake that no photograph from the ship captures. On the 3-night itinerary this stop cannot be made; on the 4-night, it is one of the most quietly memorable moments of the voyage.

Afternoon: a Nubian village visit at a lakeshore settlement — one of the communities resettled when the dam was built, now living on the edge of the lake they helped create. Your guide facilitates an introduction to the village, the houses painted in the distinctive Nubian palette of ochre, cobalt and cream, and the community that maintains its traditions on this remote shoreline. This stop is not possible on the 3-night itinerary.

The ship continues south. The morning brings Qasr Ibrim — the only monument on Lake Nasser never relocated from its original site. Originally built on a high clifftop commanding the Nile Valley, it served continuously for three thousand years as an Egyptian fortress, a Meroitic temple, a Byzantine cathedral, and finally a mosque until the Ottoman period. When the waters rose in the 1970s, the cliff became an island. Entry requires a special archaeological permit; the ship passes close to the island and your guide gives a full account of its layered history from the deck. The walls, columns and the ruins of the cathedral are clearly visible.

On the 4-night itinerary, the afternoon arrival at Abu Simbel is unhurried. There is time to settle at the anchorage, watch the sun move across the facade of the Great Temple from the ship’s deck, and prepare for the evening. The Sound and Light Show at Abu Simbel — the temples illuminated in sequence, the lake silent behind the stage — is best experienced without the fatigue of a full travel day, which is exactly what the 3-night itinerary requires. The 4-night gives you an afternoon on the lake at Abu Simbel and the evening show at the correct pace.

The last morning belongs entirely to Abu Simbel — and on the 4-night itinerary, you arrive at the temples before the crowds. The first charter flights from Aswan bring day visitors who arrive around 08:00; guests arriving from the ship the night before, with the full morning to themselves at their own pace, have one of the most rare experiences in Egyptian tourism: Abu Simbel in relative quiet.

The Great Temple of Ramesses II: four colossi at 20 metres each; the entrance hall with eight pillared figures of Ramesses as Osiris; the second hall with painted battle reliefs from the Battle of Kadesh; the vestibule; and the inner sanctuary — four seated deities, including Ramesses himself deified, aligned so that the rising sun illuminates three of the four on 22 February and 22 October each year (Ptah, god of darkness, remains in shadow). The Solar Alignment was not accidental; the axis of the temple was engineered with this precision 3,200 years ago.

The Temple of Nefertari: six 10-metre colossi on the facade — four of Ramesses, two of Nefertari, unusually equal in scale, reflecting the exceptional status Ramesses accorded his queen. The interior reliefs are among the most delicately carved and coloured in Nubia. Your guide, having spent four days explaining the history and context of every monument you have seen, brings all of it to bear here in the final visit.
